Capitalism brought prosperity to the world, but has also burdened the environment and increased social disparities. Prime Minister Kishida of Japan is determined to seek out a new model for capitalism, which generate a virtuous cycle of growth and distribution, by placing an emphasis on the importance of “human capital.” In order to create a fair and inclusive economy that would enrich people’s lives and opportunity, the externalities left behind by capitalism must be incorporated. As a member of Prime Minister Kishida’s council on the New Form of Capitalism, Mr. Shibusawa will link this capitalism for the new era with the origins of Japanese capitalism that was promoted by his great great grandfather, Eiichi Shibusawa, who was influenced by his visit to France in the late 19th century.
